When putting Henry’s big boy room together I was stuck for ages on a theme. I didn’t want to go over the top like they always do on those home makeover shoes with those crazy kid rooms but I wanted something that got him excited about having his own personal space. I finally decided on a retro space theme after I found these rocket sheets by Garnet Hill. I let Henry pick the art from several choices on art.com and – of course – he chose this rad print of a vintage robot and flying saucers on the moon. We later added a wall-mounted moon nightlight and a star constellation projector to help with his fear of the dark and he’s getting a lava lamp for Christmas.
While it is still definitely a work in progress, I recently added to the room this perfect navy and white star rug by Lorena Canals that really pulled the whole look together. Henry loves the cool stars and the softness of it but what sealed the deal for me was the fact that it is machine washable (it fits perfectly in my front loader). This makes my life easier by a million percent as we have two dogs, a cat and two kids and our rugs can get covered in dirt, juice and crumbs really quickly. Now I wish all the rugs in my house were machine-washable!
It was also important to me that it wasn’t filled with a bunch of chemicals like some rugs are so I love that it is handmade with 100% natural cotton using non-toxic VOC-free dyes as the kids will be doing a lot of laying around and playing on it. They also have a ton of cute rugs for the girls and for the rest of the home so go check out their site! Now that I’ve learned of the wonders of machine-washable rugs I’m kind-of hooked and want one in every room. I will definitely be circling back to this site when it’s time to transition Vivi from a nursery vibe to more of a big girl room. Henry’s rug is linked below as well as the other bits and pieces we bought to go with the retro space theme.
