Tucked away in the hills of Topanga Canyon, the Topanga Community Center hosts a three-day hippie/bohemian music festival every Memorial Day weekend. I’ve gone to Topanga Days every year since 1996 and it has become one of my most beloved traditions. It’s a fun weekend filled with dancing, face paint, pie eating and watermelon seed spitting contests, potato sack races, belly dancing shows, live music, shopping at the many stalls of art, drinking craft beer and catching up with friends.
My husband and I celebrate two anniversaries – our wedding, September 26th and the day we met, May 26th. It was at Topanga Days 2007 that Wiley was headlining with his band Chevy Metal – a 70s dirt rock cover band – and I was dancing in the crowd. Shortly after the show, as I was leaving the festival, Wiley ran up to me. My heart was fluttering – he was so cool with his 70s rocker vibe and I was head over heels before even meeting him. He asked for my number that day and we’ve been together ever since – 10 years, 3 dogs and 2 kids later we’re still madly in love.
Now we celebrate every anniversary the same, by taking the kids to Topanga Days and topping it off with a romantic, candlelit dinner at Saddle Peak Lodge, a gorgeous mountain lodge with delicious food, a crackling fire and an impressive wine list. Now it’s Tuesday as I write this and, sadly, back to the grind. At least I have leftovers!
